Amazing visit to the Margaret Mead Film Festival at the Natural History Museum this weekend. The film “Black Zombie” enlightened us to the fact that the whole concept of Zombies is racist and xenophobic in nature - based on misinterpretation and Hollywood’s distortion of Haiti’s beautiful Vodu religion, and on keeping “others” out, as in today’s refugee crises. “Daughters of the Forest” was a an absurdly beautiful and even psychadelic film about indigenous mushroom forager women becoming mycologists - the film eloquently gave the mushrooms a voice in a way we are attempting to do in our own plant documentaries at the moment - wonderfully executed. Brava to the directors of both films, I can’t recommend them highly enough!

I wanted to share some of shots I filmed on my recent trip to Colombia. This was such a meaningful trip - the beauty of the people, the nature, the friends I made, and the inspirational people I worked with. I am filled with gratitude! I have long wanted to work on my filming skills, and deciding to make a film on plants and wise women has been exactly the inspiration I needed to do so. I lot to learn, and I am grateful to my local filming heroes Fred McCragg, Samantha Schutz and Chris Rahm (who all worked on the Nature of Nature), and for the support of Mustafa who really does it all! I am looking forward to sharing the stories of these wise women, and their conversations with the plants, animals and the earth. I can’t wait to introduce you to Madre the most loving woman I have ever met, (who you will see a brief shot of at the end of this clip), Celine for bringing me into her magical world, and Madre’s incredible family who I am happy now to call my own Colombian family. Gracias todos! #colombia #colombiana #hummingbirds #hummingbirdsofinstagram #SensitivePlant #sensitiveplant #elpeñol #elpeñolantioquia #calalily #garden
